QC Laboratory Graduate

AECI Plant Health has an opportunity for a QC Laboratory Graduate at its Somerset West site. The successful incumbent will be responsible for assisting with sample processing, analytical procedures, microbial culture maintenance, general laboratory administration, and adherence to SHEQ requirements. The role further includes contributing to the upkeep of laboratory facilities and supporting microbial product production when required.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Analysis
- Assist with the receipt, logging, labelling, preparation, and analysis of samples in line with approved protocols.
- Capture raw data on controlled worksheets and relevant databases, ensuring accuracy and full traceability.
- Support the continuous improvement of analytical protocols under the guidance of the Microbial Team Leader.
- Prepare media, consumables, and equipment required for sample analysis.
Mother Culture Maintenance
- Assist with the isolation, purification, and maintenance of mother cultures for production, quality control, and intellectual property purposes.
Laboratory Administration
- Participate in monthly stock takes and assist with maintaining laboratory consumable, media, and chemical registers.
- Obtain quotations, liaise with suppliers, and verify that received stock meets specifications.
- File procurement documentation and maintain supplier lists.
- Maintain electronic and hard‑copy filing systems.
- Assist in managing servicing schedules for laboratory equipment and supporting Management of Change (MOC) documentation.
Housekeeping
- Ensure thorough cleaning of laboratory areas, including washing of equipment, disinfecting surfaces, floor maintenance, and waste removal.
- Contribute to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, sterilisation, and order throughout the laboratory.
SHEQ Compliance
- Support the completion of PJO’s and 3x3’s for all laboratories and submit required documentation to the SHE Manager.
- Adhere to all SHEQ policies, occupational health requirements, safety standards, and incident reporting procedures.
- Participate in internal and external audits and support maintenance of SHEQ Management Systems.
Ad Hoc Duties
- Assist with trial/test sample execution, data capture, and interpretation.
- Provide support for microbial product production (e.g., Mycorrhizae, Trichoderma) when required.
- Perform additional tasks aligned with competency and company needs as directed by the Microbial Team Leader or Management.
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 plus a B.Sc. or Technical Science degree in Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, or a related scientific field.
- Knowledge of microbial culturing techniques and good laboratory practices.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport.
