Head: Capital and Projects Procurement

Main Purpose of the Job

The Manager of Capital Procurement is accountable for leading procurement across AECI’s CAPEX portfolio, ensuring that capital projects are delivered with optimal commercial outcomes, cost efficiency, and risk mitigation. The role establishes structured sourcing approaches for capital projects and integrates procurement best practice into project lifecycle planning.

Role and Responsibilities:

Capital Procurement Management

• Define and execute the enterprise-wide capital procurement strategy aligned to AECI’s growth, asset, and investment priorities
• Oversee procurement across the full capital project portfolio, ensuring prioritisation, resource optimisation, and consistent delivery standards
• Provide executive oversight and governance across procurement, for capital projects.
• Act as a senior commercial advisor to executive leadership on capital investment decisions and represent procurement in strategic external engagements
• Design and implement a scalable capital procurement operating model, incorporating standardised processes, tools, templates, commercial controls and contracting approaches, with clear role definitions across global, regional and local structures
• Drive early procurement involvement across budgeting, forecasting, and project planning by leveraging market intelligence, total cost and risk analysis, and developing sourcing strategies that mitigate supplier and commercial risks
• Lead the end-to-end sourcing and contracting for capital projects, including supplier selection, cost modelling, commercial structuring, and negotiations to achieve optimal value and risk outcomes
• Serve as both a strategic advisor during early project phases and an execution partner during delivery by providing market insight, influencing project requirements, and ensuring supplier and supply chain readiness
• Embed total cost of ownership (TCO), lifecycle cost thinking and sustainability principles in all project procurement decisions to optimise long-term value
• Drive cost optimisation, strategic supplier selection, robust contract structuring, and overall commercial excellence across capital projects
• Lead commercial risk management across projects (contractual, financial, supply chain, execution risks)
• Drive digital enablement of capital procurement through advanced analytics, e-sourcing tools, and contract lifecycle management tools

Stakeholder Management

• Act as escalation point for major supplier disputes, claims and/or contract deviations
• Coordinate cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Operations, Projects, Legal and Finance to align procurement activities with project plans and execution requirements
• Develop, shape and manage strategic supplier relationships across global and regional markets through strategic partnerships and long-term sourcing strategies
• Ensure effective stakeholder communication, including clear articulation of procurement processes, timelines, and deliverables

Procurement Execution

• Lead procurement delivery for large scale, high-impact, complex capital projects (e.g., plant expansions, infrastructure, shutdowns, optimisation initiatives) within AECI’s project governance framework, ensuring progression through stage gates with clear validation and accountability
• Influence project design, specifications, and execution strategies to optimise total cost and risk
• Translate project objectives into clear procurement scopes, specifications, and contract deliverables; support requirement gathering, supplier evaluation, RFP/SOW development, and selection processes to ensure alignment with business outcomes
• Oversee procurement execution across projects, including supplier performance management, contract delivery, variations, disputes, and ongoing risk identification and mitigation

Reporting

• Define, track, and report on project-specific procurement metrics and dashboards (diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive) to support decision-making, governance, and executive reporting

Capital Procurement Function

• Lead and develop a high-performing capital procurement function, including capability building, performance management, and talent strategy (indirect reports)

Qualification and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance or a related field
• Postgraduate qualification in Procurement, Supply Chain, or Business Management will be advantageous
• Procurement certification, e.g. Certified Purchasing Manager
• Matric
• Minimum of 8 years proven experience in CAPEX procurement
• Proven experience with large industrial projects. (Explosives Industry knowledge advantageous.)
• Experience with multi-geography capital delivery advantageous.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, structure, analyze, and interpret complex datasets.
• Proven ability to develop and execute sourcing strategies in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
