Team Member: Mechanical Fitter

Purpose: to perform mechanical fitting, maintenance, and repair work on equipment and machinery within the Nitrates plant to ensure optimal performance, safe operations, and compliance with statutory requirements. The role focuses on minimizing equipment downtime
Key Performance Areas (KPAs)
1. Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs
-
Perform planned preventive and corrective maintenance on pumps, compressors, valves, gearboxes, conveyors, and other plant equipment.

Respond promptly and effectively to breakdowns to minimize production downtime.

Ensure all maintenance work complies with required quality, safety, and technical standards.
2. Installation & Commissioning
-
Install, align, and commission new mechanical equipment according to specifications.

Execute equipment modifications and adjustments to enhance reliability and performance.
3. Safety & Compliance
-
Adhere strictly to all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), permit-to-work systems, and confined space regulations.

Proactively identify hazards and implement corrective actions to prevent incidents.

Maintain a zero-harm mindset in all maintenance activities.
4. Technical Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving

Diagnose mechanical faults and determine root causes of equipment failures.

Implement effective and sustainable solutions to restore plant operations efficiently.
5. Documentation & Reporting
-
Accurately complete job cards, maintenance logs, and equipment history records.

Report defects, risks, and improvement opportunities to supervisors in a timely manner.
6. Continuous Improvement & Reliability
-
Participate in plant reliability and maintenance improvement initiatives.

Recommend and implement best practices to enhance equipment performance and longevity.
7. Teamwork & Communication
-
Collaborate effectively with Production Operators, Maintenance Teams, Engineers, and HSE personnel.

Provide technical support and share knowledge to improve team capability and performance.

Equipment uptime and reliability (target % availability)

Compliance with preventive maintenance schedules

Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)

Zero lost-time injuries and full adherence to safety protocols

Accuracy and timeliness of maintenance reporting and documentation

Reduction in repeat breakdowns and unplanned stoppages
Qualifications & Experience
-
Matric Certificate or N3/N4 with relevant Fitter and Turner subjects
-
N2–N6 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
-
Trade Test: Mechanical Fitter (Red Seal) – essential
-
3–5 years’ experience in a heavy industrial, chemical, or manufacturing environment
-
Experience in a nitrates or chemical plant environment will be advantageous
Technical Knowledge & Skills
-
Strong understanding of mechanical fitting, maintenance, and repair principles
-
Knowledge of pumps, compressors, valves, gearboxes, conveyors, and rotating equipment
-
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals
-
Sound knowledge of plant safety systems (LOTO, permit-to-work, confined space entry)

Familiarity with preventive maintenance and reliability-centered maintenance practices
