Job Purpose
To lead and execute advanced machining, toolmaking, and CNC operations for the manufacture, maintenance, and modification of precision tools, dies, moulds, jigs, fixtures, and complex mechanical components. The role ensures optimal tooling performance, minimal production downtime, and compliance with quality and safety standards while mentoring junior artisans and apprentices.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical & Operational
- Manufacture, assemble, repair, and modify tools, dies, moulds, jigs, and fixtures to precise tolerances.
- Program, set, and operate CNC machines (milling and turning).
- Perform advanced conventional machining (lathe, milling, grinding, EDM where applicable).
- Interpret complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications.
- Conduct root cause analysis on tooling failures and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure tooling supports production efficiency and product quality standards.
- Perform precision measurements using advanced measuring instruments and gauges.
- Oversee machine setups and ensure compliance with machining best practices.
2. Leadership & Mentorship
- Guide and mentor junior artisans, apprentices, and machine operators.
- Allocate tasks within the toolroom or machining section.
- Support skills transfer and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical input into tooling design improvements.
3. Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to SHE standards and company policies.
- Maintain strict tolerance and quality standards.
- Ensure machines are maintained and calibrated.
- Support audits and compliance inspections.
4. Maintenance & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in breakdown support and shutdown activities.
- Drive continuous improvement in machining processes.
- Recommend tooling upgrades or process enhancements to reduce downtime.
Minimum Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Recognized Trade Test Certificate (Tool & Die Maker / Machinist).
- CNC Programming certification (advantageous).
- N4–N6 Mechanical Engineering (advantageous).
- Valid driver’s license (if required).
Experience
- Minimum 5–8 years post-trade experience in a manufacturing, mining, or heavy engineering environment.
- Proven experience in tool and die manufacturing and maintenance.
- Strong CNC programming and machine setup experience.
- Experience with tight tolerances and complex precision components.
- Supervisory or senior artisan experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced machining principles and tooling design knowledge.
- CNC programming (Fanuc / Siemens / Haas or equivalent systems).
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
- Excellent interpretation of technical drawings and CAD models.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong leadership and coaching skills.
- Knowledge of quality standards and ISO compliance (if applicable).
