Purpose of the Role

The Process Controller – Storage & Distribution (Nitrates) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of nitrate storage, handling, and distribution processes. The role ensures product integrity, adherence to safety and environmental standards, and continuity of supply to internal and external customers.


Key Responsibilities

Operations & Process Control

  • Monitor and control storage and distribution processes for nitrate products via DCS/SCADA and field operations.

  • Ensure correct loading, unloading, transfer, and storage of nitrate materials in accordance with operating procedures.

  • Coordinate product movements between production units, storage tanks, warehouses, and dispatch points.

  • Identify and respond to process deviations, alarms, and abnormal conditions.

Safety, Health & Environment (SHE)

  • Operate in strict compliance with nitrate safety regulations, Major Hazard Installation (MHI) requirements, and site SHE standards.

  • Conduct pre-task risk assessments, permit-to-work checks, and safe isolation procedures.

  • Act promptly in emergency situations and support incident response and investigations.

  • Promote safe work practices and report unsafe conditions or near misses.

Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure product quality is maintained during storage and distribution.

  • Complete operational logs, checklists, and documentation accurately.

  • Support audits, inspections, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Coordination & Communication

  • Liaise with production, logistics, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure smooth operations.

  • Coordinate dispatch schedules, loading priorities, and handovers across shifts.

  • Communicate operational status, constraints, and risks clearly to stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in root cause analyses, risk assessments, and improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute to the review and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Support training and mentoring of junior operators when required.


Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Chemical Engineering or NQF 4 in Chemical Operations

Experience

  • Experience in chemical processing, storage, or distribution operations (nitrates or hazardous chemicals preferred).
  • Exposure to control room operations and/or field operations in a high-risk environment.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of nitrate hazards, storage conditions, and transport requirements.

  • Familiarity with DCS/SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of SHE, MHI, and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to work shifts and respond to operational emergencies.
