Job Purpose
To fulfil the planning and coordination function for all jobs executed by the FMS Workshop or outsourced to approved external suppliers. This role is responsible for ensuring the effective planning, scheduling, and coordination of workshop activities through the optimal allocation of resources, materials, machinery, technical documentation, and labour. The incumbent will ensure customer delivery requirements are met while maintaining quality, cost, safety, and operational performance standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Work Assessment and Allocation
Evaluate incoming work requests and determine the most effective execution strategy by assessing whether work should be completed internally or outsourced to approved suppliers, considering capacity, capability, cost, quality, and delivery requirements.
2. Internal Job Planning and Scheduling
Develop and maintain detailed production schedules for workshop activities, including machine loading, labour allocation, material availability, routing of components, and estimation of processing times across work centres.
3. External Supplier Coordination
Coordinate outsourced work with approved suppliers, raise and manage purchase requisitions and orders, monitor supplier performance, and ensure delivery commitments are achieved.
4. Material and Drawing Management
Ensure the availability and control of approved engineering drawings, technical specifications, raw materials, and supporting documentation required for successful job execution.
5. Delivery Management
Monitor production progress and manage delivery schedules to ensure customer requirements and agreed turnaround times are consistently achieved.
6. Customer Communication
Serve as a key point of contact for customers by providing updates on job status, delivery commitments, delays, and corrective actions where required.
7. Resource Coordination and Support
Support workshop supervisors and personnel through effective workload balancing, resource allocation, prioritisation, and coordination of activities.
8. Stakeholder Collaboration
Work closely with workshop management, engineering personnel, supply chain stakeholders, suppliers, and customers to ensure alignment of priorities and resolution of operational challenges.
9. Reporting and Performance Monitoring
Maintain accurate planning records, prepare progress reports, monitor key performance indicators, and provide management with reliable planning and scheduling information.
10. SHEQ Compliance
Promote and support safe working practices by ensuring planning activities comply with all Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- Matric
- NTC2 Mechanical Trade Test in one of the following trades:
- Fitter
- Machinist
- Tool and Die Maker
- Advantageous: Qualification in Production Planning, Operations Management, Manufacturing Management, or Supply Chain Management. SAP or ERP system certification.
- Minimum 3–5 years' shop floor experience in engineering planning within machining, fitting, grinding, or similar manufacturing environments.
- Experience in workshop scheduling, capacity planning, and resource allocation.
- Experience working with external suppliers and subcontracted engineering services will be advantageous.
- Experience using SAP PM or similar ERP systems will be advantageous.
