Purpose of the Job
The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting safe, accurate, and efficient laboratory operations through the collection, handling, and preparation of samples for analysis. The role ensures adherence to safety, health, environmental, and quality standards, including support of the ISO 17025 Quality Management System. The Laboratory Assistant plays a key role in maintaining high standards of housekeeping, sample integrity, equipment readiness, and waste management to enable seamless laboratory analysis and operational reliability.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Perform analysis on raw materials, in process samples and final products
- Maintain a high standard of Quality and Safety when handling samples and performing housekeeping duties.
- Testing of primary explosives
- Analysing samples on Microscope
- Analysing/Testing samples of BAM Friction tester
- Conduct different tests within the Laboratory
- Analysing samples on Malvern equipment
- Comply with Safety, Health and Environment standards
- Assist with updating of test methods, operating instructions and other documentation
- Trainer for some of the equipment used in the laboratory
- Assist with the accreditation for ISO 9001, 17020,17025 and 18001
- Collect and deliver samples and results to and from the various plants and customers
- Assist with various duties for the effective operation of the laboratory
- Drawing samples from production and analysing them, the person should ideally be made responsible for recording of analysis data, trend analysis, yield analysis, waste records, labelling of products, quality control of incoming raw materials and dispatch of products.
- Liaison with plant and stores (if relevant) and stock control.
- Assess and understand whether correlations can be found between functional detonator parameters (e.g. burn speed, hydrogen evolution and failure mode occurrences) and certain of the specification parameters of the silicon powders.
Qualifications & Experience
- Diploma in Chemistry, Analytical Science or equivalent
- Authorised and Qualified Magazine Master will be an advantage
- Driver’s License
- Minimum of 1 year in the explosive and / or chemical industry
- Sound chemistry and analytical chemistry and chemical engineering knowledge
