Junior Industrial Designer

Purpose of the job: The incumbent’s role is to develop innovative, ergonomic, user-friendly designs that attract consumers, as well as coordinate the look and function of product lines.

Required outputs: Functional

• Develop draft sketches and illustrations of new products, or refine existing designs to improve performance and user interaction.
• Generate detailed engineering drawings and 3D CAD models to validate design intent, tolerances, and functional requirements.
• Build and test physical prototypes using appropriate materials and fabrication methods.
• Iterate and optimise designs in accordance with the User Requirements Specification (URS) and engineering validation feedback.
• Conduct research on materials, manufacturing processes, design standards, and product limitations.
• Ensure designs meet structural, mechanical, and functional requirements while adhering to Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) best practices.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, production, and supply chain teams to ensure designs are robust, cost-effective, and manufacturable at scale.
• Perform cost analysis, including material selection, manufacturing processes, and labour inputs, to optimise product viability.
• Participate in technical design reviews and multidisciplinary engineering meetings.
• Contribute effectively within cross-functional teams, ensuring alignment between design intent and production capabilities.

Requirements: Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor of Arts or B-tech in Industrial Design 
• 2 - 3 years of experience in a professional design environment.
• Ability to be organized and follow a systematic method of performing a task.
• Experience in SolidWorks, CorelDraw and KeyShot.
• A design portfolio exhibiting sound knowledge of first principles and conceptual design.
