Job Purpose

To design, coordinate and deliver effective technical training and competency development programmes for employees across the Initiating Systems IS Powders plants, including Lead Azide, Tube Drawing, Effluent, Silicon and Spray Dry. The role is responsible for strengthening technical capability, operational competence and employee development while ensuring training and competency requirements are aligned with AECI standards, operational procedures, applicable legislation, SHEQ requirements and industry best practice.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement structured technical training programmes aligned to plant requirements and business objectives.
  • Conduct training needs analysis in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to identify skills and competency gaps.
  • Develop training materials, including manuals, presentations, e-learning content, workplace learning material and assessment tools relevant to IS Powders Plant operations.
  • Coordinate internal and external training interventions, workshops, certifications and on-the-job training programmes.
  • Deliver classroom, virtual and practical training, including hands-on on-the-job training and refresher interventions.
  • Conduct structured on-the-job observations and competency assessments to ensure employees perform tasks in accordance with operational instructions, procedures and codes of practice.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through assessments, employee feedback, competency assessments, training metrics and performance information.
  • Maintain accurate training records, competency matrices, certification status, LMS information and training compliance documentation.
  • Support managers in developing individual development plans and identifying employee development and specialist training needs.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring support to employees as required.
  • Ensure continuous improvement of training programmes and content based on operational requirements, regulatory changes, audit findings and emerging training needs.
  • Monitor training completion, competency status and certification requirements and provide accurate training reports and insights to management.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, external training providers and SETAs to support effective training delivery and compliance with applicable requirements.

 

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of learning and development principles, training processes and competency development.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing operations, with experience in an explosives manufacturing environment being advantageous for the role.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory and legislative requirements, including the Skills Development Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Explosives Act.
  • Knowledge of learning management systems and training record management.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify competency gaps and recommend appropriate training interventions.
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, particularly in training records, competency assessments and compliance documentation.
  • Ability to develop clear and effective learning and assessment materials.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite at an advanced level.
  • Ability to work independently, plan and organise training activities and respond effectively to changing operational requirements.

 

Educational Qualifications

  • National Diploma in Chemical Engineering or related technical discipline
  • National Certificate in Chemical Operations NQF4 (Advantageous)
  • Certificate/Higher Certificate in Occupationally Directed Education, Training and Development Practice (OD ETDP)
  • Must be a Qualified Assessor
  • Coach the Learner certification

 

Experience

  • 3–5 years of experience in technical training and competency development within a manufacturing, chemical processing or other industrial operations environment.
  • Practical experience in learning material development.
  • Experience within an explosives manufacturing or highly regulated process environment would be advantageous.
  • Engaging with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
