Job Purpose

To perform precision grinding operations on mechanical components to required tolerances and specifications in support of plant maintenance and manufacturing activities. The role ensures high-quality finishing of components to improve equipment reliability and operational efficiency.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate surface, cylindrical, and internal grinding machines to produce precision components.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
  • Grind shafts, rollers, sleeves, dies, and other mechanical parts to required tolerances.
  • Measure and inspect finished components using micrometres, verniers, bore gauges, and dial indicators.
  • Maintain and dress grinding wheels to ensure accuracy and safety.
  • Repair and refurbish worn mechanical components.
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and safe machine operation.
  • Perform routine maintenance on grinding machines.
  • Support breakdowns, shutdowns, and planned maintenance activities.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and 5S standards in the workshop.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Recognized Trade Test Certificate (Fitter/Turner/Toolmaker or related mechanical trade).
  • Formal training in precision grinding (advantageous).
  • Valid driver’s license (if required by site).

 

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years post-trade experience in a manufacturing, mining, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Proven experience operating surface and cylindrical grinding machines.
  • Experience working with tight tolerances and high-precision components.
  • Exposure to plant maintenance and breakdown environments (advantageous).

 

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of grinding principles and tolerances.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
  • Knowledge of different materials and grinding techniques.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of SHE (Safety, Health & Environmental) standards.
