Job Purpose

To execute precision machining operations using conventional and/or CNC turning and milling equipment to manufacture, repair, and maintain mechanical components that support plant reliability and operational efficiency. The role ensures high-quality workmanship, reduced equipment downtime, and strict adherence to safety and engineering standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate conventional lathes and milling machines to manufacture components according to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Interpret and read technical drawings, blueprints, and mechanical schematics accurately.
  • Perform precision measurements using micrometers, verniers, dial gauges, and related instruments.
  • Manufacture and refurbish mechanical components such as shafts, bushes, sleeves, couplings, brackets, and related parts.
  • Conduct repairs on worn or damaged components to restore operational functionality.
  • Perform fault-finding and problem-solving on plant mechanical equipment.
  • Maintain machines and tooling in safe and optimal working condition.
  • Support breakdown maintenance and shutdown activities when required.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in accordance with workshop procedures.
  • Comply with SHE (Safety, Health & Environmental) standards and company policies at all times.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Recognized Trade Test Certificate as Turner and/or Miller.
  • N3–N6 Mechanical Engineering (advantageous).
  • Valid driver’s license (if required by site).

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years post-trade experience in a manufacturing, mining, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Experience working with conventional lathe and milling machines.
  • CNC machining experience (advantageous).
  • Experience in plant maintenance and breakdown repairs.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of machining principles and tolerances.
  • Ability to work with precision and attention to detail.
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure during breakdowns.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Teamwork and communication skills.
