Artisan: Instrumentation

This role is designed to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of instrumentation and control systems within the nitrates plant. The role involves installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of electrical and electronic instruments used in process control to support production targets and operational excellence.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Install, maintain, calibrate, and repair instrumentation and control systems in accordance with operational standards.
  • Troubleshoot faults in instruments, sensors, controllers, transmitters, and related control systems.
  • Ensure all instrumentation work complies with safety, quality, and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance and inspections to minimize downtime and ensure reliability of instrumentation systems.
  • Collaborate with process engineers, electricians, and other artisans to ensure smooth operation of plant systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of work done, calibration certificates, and maintenance logs.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to optimize instrumentation reliability and performance.
  • Support commissioning and decommissioning of instrumentation equipment for plant projects or upgrades.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to apprentices and junior artisans.

 

Qualifications and Experience

 

  • Matric certificate or N3/N4 with relevant electrical/instrumentation subjects
  • Trade-tested Electrician / Artisan Instrumentation qualification with recognized certification.
  • National Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, or related field is advantageous.
  • Professional registration (Pr. Eng / ECSA) preferred but not mandatory.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in instrumentation within chemical, mining, or industrial plant operations.
  • Proven experience in calibration, maintenance, and fault-finding of process instruments (e.g., pressure, temperature, flow, level).
  • Experience with PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and control loop troubleshooting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, motors, switchgear, and process control.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to operational compliance
